Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

I am a very frugal person.  I have tried many ways to save money, some have worked out and some haven't.  I have always hated spending a lot of money on soap.  So I started doing research on ways to save money on my soaps.

Dishwasher detergent is the one I decided to tackle first.  I have found many recipes that looked like they would work, some required lemon Kool-aid and others called for citric acid.  Matt was against the ones that required Kool-aid, because he thought that it would stain the dishwasher and we didn't want to spend the money on citric acid, it is costly.  We found one that called for lemishine, a lot closer to my budget range.

The recipe goes as follows: 1 box Borax, 1 box Washing Soda, 2 bottles of Lemi-shine, and 1 1/2 of the canisters of Kosher Salt.  You mix all of this together and you can start using.  A word to the wise leave whatever container open for a few days and stir it around a couple of times a day, or else the citric acid in the Lemi-shine will make it clump and you will have a heck of a time using it.

To use it you just put 1 TBSP into your soap dispenser and run like normal.  Another thing that you can do it use vinegar in you dishwasher as a rinse aid. (Normally I don't use vinegar on anything else because it corrodes everything so bad, but dishwashers are mostly plastic and it uses so little that it won't really hurt it or your pipes to much.

I have really loved this and it lasts forever.  I don't think I will ever go back to cascade.
